Master of Disaster

A young boy, probably about 5 or 6 was running through an open field, hurrying as fast as he could to the top of a hill. He saw in the distance a transport ship hovering up in the air. The boy's eyes widened in excitement as the ship turned towards him and picked up speed. As the ship came closer he waved towards the pilot at the helm who in turn waved back. The ship then engaged it's primary thrusters as it blasted upwards towards the sky, before disappearing into atmo. The boy jumped in the air and continued to wave, feeling a sadness knowing it was gone, seeing only the remnants of the smoke trail it left behind.

The boy slowly walked down the hill with his head down and made his way back through the field to a cozy looking house. A woman opened the door and smiled at him. "What's wrong baby?" The boy fought back tears as he rested his head on her chest. She placed her hands on his head, holding him tight. The boy spoke into her shirt. "I miss daddy already. When will he be back?"

The Mother got down to one knee, kissing him on the head while holding him. "He will be back, real soon Cole. Someday you are gonna be up there, just like him. And you know what? You are going to have so many stories to tell me." She hugged him tight as Cole smiled back, his tears slowly fading.

The Sun then became very bright, blinding cole almost to the point of a searing pain.

"He has been brain dead, 7 minutes. Start the recording"

"Subject Cole Jagger. Dead for 7 minutes from blood loss. Cause was a mortal bullet wound to the chest. Extensive internal damage. Preparing to inject subject with RD-0014. Note that this will be trial #16. All previous subjects have failed due to their body rejecting the engineered adrenaline to restart the heart.

"Injecting him with RD-0014, Now."

"Nothing.."

"Wait for it.."

"Still nothing."

"Just wait one more..."

"Heart rhythm restored."

"See if he stablizes."

Cole felt his entire life torn away from him. Death was real. He was dead. But why were his eyes opening.

His eyes opened to a spotlight above him which caused intense pain to his head. He saw several blurs of human figures in white coats and heard them talking and a beeping sound of the heart monitor going.

"He is conscious, Put him under before we lose him!"

Cole felt a mask placed over his nose and mouth. He felt tired instantly and passed out within seconds. But he was dreaming this time. It was no longer a nightmare.

Drowning.....

This must be what drowning is like.....

Where am I?

When will my trials end....

This is what Job felt like.

Sssssshhhhhhhhhhhh. Hush now Cole. I told you I would help you through all of this and I have brought you back from the dead.

You're not real. Nothing is real. I'm trapped in this sea of torment alone and I made you up because I was scared. Now I'm just tired and want to rest.

Oh heh heh heh heh. Very good my friend. You believe what you want. I'll go for now but I am most certainly real and you are not alone.....

Ah quiet at last. Cole had seen medical men just before someone gased him. Maybe they had made it to help on time and he just dreamed he died. Maybe he'll wake up and be able to run off with all of his crew mates on Glory. Dom was going to help him master his marksman skills. Trina had saved his life and was his angel. Micheal he looked up to for his bravery as security officer. Khei though he hadn't had much opportunity to talk to her could teach him more about flight computers which would improve his already natural talent into an amazing savant type skill. Ian would teach him confidence and leadership skills and he would watch him whenever he could to soak up some of that. They were the best people he could've ever run into and he couldn't wait to thank them. Thank Trina for saving him. The drive was strong and he felt better then the last time he was awake.

He needed to know what was going on but the gas was too hard to fight.

Cole could hear voices as he drifted between sleep and reality.

"His body was replaced aboard Ziggurat with a mutilated cadaver. They won't know the difference as he was scheduled for an autopsy."

Time passed.

"Genetic organs successfully transplanted to replace damaged ones."

Cole woke up with chains on his ankles. His clothes were tattered and his body was weak and thin. Feeling his face he felt a long beard and his hair was long and unkempt. On his chest he felt sore. A long pink scar covered his torso. He couldn't remember his name, or how he got here. A whistling siren went off, one that felt familiar to Cole.

"Get to work you maggots!" A voice boomed over the intercom. Cole's eyes adjusted and he was in a closet like room with an old bed and dirty toilet. The door to his closet made an unlocking sound as it slid open, the dimly lit area becoming bright. Venturing outside Cole saw dozens of men using pick axes on a mountainous landscape. The entire landscape was rocks and boulders. The sky was a dim orange as if it was on fire. Multiple uniformed guards patrolled the area, whipping those that wern't working.

Cole saw a Pick Axe laying on the ground near him.

He shuffled out into the world and picked up the pickaxe. He began to mindlessly chip away at the mountain. How had he come here? What had he ever done to deserve any of this? It must have been bad for him to block it all out.

I have your answers...

He shook his head and told his internal voice to pipe down. He lived in that closet for a little too long he told himself. He's gone a little soft in the head. Dreaming of a life that never happened. People he didn't know and things that couldn't have happened. He had been here for...how long had he been here? It didn't matter. He was confused and he knew that hard work would do him good. Clear his mind.

The sky had a gray haze and through it's veil were hundreds of stars that littered the sky. It seemed as if there was never day or night, just a recurring twilight atmosphere.

The air was thick and the taste was metallic. After a few hours of picking away, it became harder to breathe. A guard walked around with oxygen masks and started passing them out. The guard already had his on as he handed it to Cole.

The area was a penal colony. Several guard towers littered the landscape with armed guards on post. A large building rested behind him where he has just exited.

The guard gruffly handed him a mask and he put it on. After these hours of picking away he was amazed that he wasn't more tired. Looking through the tatters he wore he saw unfamiliar muscles that he didn't "remember" from the life that he dreams about at night. Not that he really could focus on anything from before. His arms were well toned and told him that he must have been here years. There was no fat on him and all this hard work had sculpted him into the ragged specimen that he had become.

He was curious suddenly to find out what brought him here. He didn't think of it often but today it nagged at him. He began to walk back towards the large building knowing the ire of the guards were ruthless but something drew him.

As Cole approached the building he saw the doorway which led to their "closets" and past that a large gated arch way which seemed to lead into a very decorative and ornate court yard. Cole felt pain tear into his back as the snapping of a whip was evident.

"Back to work!" One of the guards yelled as he brought the whip back to lash Cole again.

Cole noticed a metal bracelet that was tightly cuffed on his left wrist with a green blinking light.

A nearby male prisoner with dark skin and wearing a head wrap picked away at a nearby boulder. He briefly glanced at Cole before looking back down at what he was doing.

Suddenly Cole heard a guard yelling. "STOP!"

A Prisoner ran from several guards as he passed one of the guard towers. A warning shot was fired at the Prisoners feet but he kept running, trying not to trip with shackles. "I need to leave! My family needs me!" The prisoner cried out as he ran further down the rocky landscape. The Prisoners bracelet began to flash red as there was a loud whirling sound. Suddenly the prisoner exploded as pieces of him decorated the area. A charred rock smoked in the distance from where he once stood.

This wasn't right. In his confusion he thought that he deserved to be here but something was off. When he saw his fellow prisoner scatter into a red mist he knew that he had to get away from here.

He shuffled over to the dark skinned prisoner and began to work again. He waited till the guard was gone and then spoke. "We need to get out of here." He was amazed how little he thought or reacted to the pain in his back. He began to pick away again.

The dark skinned man eyed Cole as he picked away at the rocks.

"Keep your voice down. Less you want me and you to get whipped!"

He slammed away at the rocks as he dug deep into the ground. He kept his head down as he talked to you in a whispered tone.

"There ain't no leaving here. Less it be by the Lord of Steel. He runs this place. No way youze gettin that braclet off either. Only way is to beat the Lord of Steel's champion in a duel. If you unlucky they will pick you for a duel anyways for entertainment, to show the others there is no hope. No one ever wins. Welcome to the Xenon, the penal colony that doesn't exist on a moon in the middle of no where."

Hearing what the man had to say Cole was fascinated. Something in him called for blood and here that was his way out. The darkness he held in check glimmered and he shut it down. He felt that he could lose himself in it if he allowed.

Cole had to do something to gain this Lord of Steel's attention. He looked around looking for anything to make himself known. The voice in his head eyed the back of the man next to him and made his hands holding the pickaxe itch. Cold sweat began to form his brow.

The dark skinned man eyed Cole. "Just shut your mouth and keep your head down." The dark skinned man picked away as the sound of a whistle could be heard.

Guards on horseback began to surround an older man with a long white beard. "You have been chosen by the Lord of Steel."

"Noo! Please!" He cried out as a net was thrown around the old man. The horsemen dragged the old man to the gates as they slowly opened. Once inside the gates closed as the old man was dragged into the Court Yard.

"To your cells scum!" A guard yelled at all the Prisoners to return inside.

Cole spat on the ground as the guard spoke to him. Anger from deep inside of him welled up inside. The voice in his head felt cheated of it's prey. He threw down the pickaxe and began to walk back into his closet giving the guards the sign of the demon, fist clenched index and pinky out, he wondered how he even knew such a sign. He was frustrated at his helplessness yet helplessness seemed familiar to him.

Cole awoke to the sound of a metal tray being dropped into his cell from a slot in the door. The slot then closed loudly as it was locked. The tray consisted of slop in a bowl, a piece of stale bread and a small cup of water.

Days seemed like they blurred together as each day he was awoken and went out to break apart rocks. At the end of the day, the rocks were collected and special technicians removed a silver metal from them.

Work. Eat. Sleep. Repeat.

"Cole... Don't forget who you are. I love you my baby." Her voice overwhelmed him with a warm sensation.

Crack!

The whip lashed at his leg as warm blood dripped to his feet and to the floor. "Wake up! Time to move." The guard snorted.

Cole was shoved outside as 2 dozen prisoners and the dark skinned man were escorted to the big iron gate. The gate slowly opened as the guards escorted them to a marble courtyard. The courtyard contained a seating area that overlooked an enclosed pit. At the highest elevation of the courtyard was an Iron Throne that looked like it was made for a warrior, rather than a King.

A trumpet went off as a man wearing chainmail armor and plating entered from behind a curtain. His face was covered with a metal helmet that had wings extended from each side. He slowly approached the throne as a voice boomed. "All hail the Lord of Steel!" A cheer erupted from the multitude of guards as he took his place at the throne. The Lord of Steel signaled to the pit as the old man from earlier was pushed inside. The old man had a sword in his hand and appeared weak as he looked around helplessly.

More cheers erupted as a shirtless, very muscular man entered from the opposite side of the pit. He was wearing a metal helmet that looked like a bull's head and carried a very large two handed axe.

The Lord of Steel's deep voice reigned over the area. "Begin!"

The Old Man didn't even have a chance to react as he was kicked to the ground and then beheaded in a bloody mess.

Raising his bloody axe, the Bull Champion found favor from the Lord of Steel and aborbed the applause from the crowd.

"Is there no one else who wishes to challenge my Champion?" The Lord of Steel stood up as he towered over the crowd and looked around.

Anger surged through Cole as the pain from the whip woke him up. Cole worked and worked and worked and then shuffled to the arena. Cole's eyes gleamed in the arena. The atmosphere of physical combat. The medieval decor and pomp rushed into Cole filling his senses. The champion of the Lord of Steel lopped off the head of the old man like a sheaf of wheat.

Cole watched the Lord of Steel stand up from his mighty throne. A warriors throne that Cole hunger to sit in. Cole would rain down furious anger and anyone who stood in his way. Cole would become the warrior.
The Lord of Steel

"Is there no one else who wishes to challenge my Champion?"
Cole's eyes gleamed bright. He stood up and yelled, "I'LL FIGHT HIM!!!"

The Lord of Steel clapped his hands twice as Cole began to float towards him. "No need to fight my Master. I bow down to you." The Lord of Steel bowed down to Cole as servant girls floated up to him and placed a golden crown on his head. Cole then floated up to Space as he danced with the stars and raced meteors. What a joy it was to fly again. His Mothers face appeared on a planet as arms grew out of it and gave him a hug. Cole wished it could last forever.

Everything came crashing down as he awoke to a loud bump. He was laying on a bunk in a small undecorated room. The walls were metal and there was a closed metal door and an intercom by it.

A voice came over the intercom. "Approaching atmo soon Captain Silver."

Cole felt pain in his chest from the long scar that was there. He couldn't remember who he was and what was reality or not. His head was throbbing. Cole saw a bracelet on his left wrist that was secured tightly with a green blinking light.

Oh Gods what the hell? Cole sat up nauseas. The room spun and he ran to the corner of the room and dry heaved into the corner hoping for more then then the nothing that came out. He felt like death and his body was racked with pain. He didn't know who he was or what was going on but in a funny way he felt that this was more familiar then the confidence his Was it a dream or is this? showed.

Cole approached the intercom and said weakly, "What's going on up there?" He wasn't even sure that the intercom was two way or just another trick from his captors. His realities were colliding and confusing him to no end.

Cole pushed the button but it didn't seem to work. After a few moments the intercom came to life with a mans voice. "Wake up boy! You overslept. You were supposed to be at the engine room 30 minutes ago. Grab a broom from the closet in the hall and double time it over here!"

"Ma shong!" Cole ran out and grabbed the broom. He couldn't believe that he overslept like that. What was happening to him? He was never one to shirk his responsibilities. His mother raised him better.....

He stopped in his tracks! His mother! He remembered his mother! She was his best friend and companion when his father was gone on a trip. Gone flying! Flying! He was flying he needed to fly! It was his passion. He was crying in the corridor silently having had a breakthrough but he was already late enough as it is. He wiped his eyes and continued to run towards the engine room. I may start there but I'll find a way to the helm eventually.

Cole found his way to the engine room by following the loud noise it generated from the whirling and groaning of it's mechanical parts. The entire ship was dimly lit and it's corridors were pieces of rusted scrap metal that were roughly put together.

The engine room was an average size, the engine itself took up most of the room as it's gears constantly spun in sequence to produce the loud blaring effect.

A man slid out from underneath the engine in overalls and thick work glasses. He was heavy set in a muscular sort of way and covered in oil. He had gray curly hair and a short, thick gray beard. He was probably about fifty or so years of age and he seemed to have vast experience judging by his grease stained skin and demeanor.

"Your late. Get to work by cleaning the floor boy!"

Pressure started escaping from the engine as Mack cursed aloud and started hitting it with a hammer. "And you will address me as Mr. Mack!" He yelled at Cole while hammering.

"Yes sir mister Mack sir" Cole got to sweeping feverishly hoping that he would soon earn his place among this crew. He had a vague feeling like he already was accepted but when he looked at Mr. Mack he felt like he shouldn't be there. Probably more of that hallucinated life he lived bleeding through into reality. Cole knocked a toolbox off a bench and scattered the tools everywhere. Scrambling to pick them up he hoped not to upset Mr. Mack too much.
